Since Brad Holmes assumed the role of general manager for the Detroit Lions, he has consistently utilized multiple picks in a draft for the same position. He did so during his inaugural draft in 2021 when he chose Levi Onwuzurike and Alim McNeil.
In 2022, he selected three edge rushers. He picked Aidan Hutchinson and Josh Pascal in the first and second rounds and then added James Houston in the sixth round. The 2024 draft saw him implement this strategy once more. Holmes used the team’s first two picks on cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw. He might actually have double dipped for a second time in that draft as they selected Christian Mahogany as a guard and discussion is now circulating about Giovanni Manu possibly being an option at that position as well.
Now The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy speculates that the Lions might attempt this strategy again in 2025 and draft a pair of edge rushers.
