Tom Cruise recalled an experience while filming a stunt for Mission: Impossible II, where he hid a broken foot to complete the scene.
The movie, released in 2000, features Cruise as Ethan Hunt, facing terrorists to secure a dangerous virus. The film is known for its thrilling stunts, particularly the opening scene where Cruise climbs a mountain and jumps between cliffs.
In an interview with Empire magazine before the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cruise reflected on this challenging stunt. He faced numerous delays because of rain during filming in Australia, leading the studio to consider canceling the sequence. Despite this, Cruise pushed to keep the climbing scene, feeling it was essential for the film’s opening.
He described a morning when, after weeks of poor weather, the conditions finally improved. Feeling the pressure to make the scene work, he decided to climb the mountain without telling anyone about his injury. As he struggled against the elements and the soft rock, he performed a tricky maneuver called the Iron Cross while genuinely hanging between the cliffs. He worried about slipping and knew he couldn’t do the stunt again, wanting to nail it in one take. Despite his broken foot, which he kept a secret, he finished the shot, enjoying the collaboration with director John Woo and believing in the impact of their work.
