Lions Reporter Thinks Team Might Double Up in the Draft at Important Position

Since Brad Holmes assumed the role of general manager for the Detroit Lions, he has developed a tendency to utilize multiple picks in a draft for the same position. He did so during his initial draft in 2021 when he chose Levi Onwuzurike and Alim McNeil. In 2022, he selected three edge rushers.

He picked Aidan Hutchinson and Josh Pascal in the first and second rounds and later added James Houston in the sixth.

The 2024 draft saw him apply this strategy once more. Holmes used the team’s first two selections on cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw. He might actually end up having double dipped a second time in that draft as they also selected Christian Mahogany and a guard, and now there is also speculation regarding Giovanni Manu potentially being a candidate at the position as well. Currently, The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy believes the Lions may attempt this strategy again in 2025 and select a pair of edge rushers. “With Holmes informing reporters at both the combine and annual meetings that the Lions would be eager to add multiple edge rushers, is he suggesting a double-dip at that position? It certainly wouldn’t be the first occasion. ” Pouncy also noted the depth available at the position in this year’s draft class.
